In 1881 Thomas was living at 1 Park Place, Stratford, West Ham, EssexG, in the household of his widowed mother Mary, and was recorded in the census as Thomas Sackett, a scholar, aged nine and born in Stratford, Essex.3
Thomas served in the British Army in the 4th Essex Regiment, enlisting at Warley, EssexG, on 17 August 1889. He saw service in Cyprus, India, and in South Africa during the Second Boer War. He was discharged in 1902. He re-enlisted on 17 August 1903, joining the Royal Garrison Regiment. He again served in South Africa, and was discharged in November 1905.4
