Thomas Sackett
Father | Thomas Sackett (1618-1666) |
Mother | Mary Coleman (c 1620-c 1675) |
Thomas Sackett, maltster and grazier of Minster in Thanet, Kent, son of Thomas Sackett and Mary Coleman, was born about 1641.1 He died aged about 482 and was buried at Minster in ThanetG on 11 November 1689.5 He married first at Canterbury St Margaret, KentG, in 1668, Sarah (___) Fuller, widow of John Fuller.3 Sarah died just four years later and was buried at Minster in ThanetG on 7 September 1672.6 He married second at Minster in ThanetG on 21 December 1673, Jane Spratt.4 Jane was buried at Minster in Thanet, KentG, on 11 November 1689, the same day as her husband Thomas.5
Thomas, then a maltster, acted as bondsman on his sister Elizabeth's marriage licence issued on 12 November 1672.
Thomas made his will in Minster in ThanetG on 16 October 1689, naming as beneficiaries his wife Jane, his brother Paul, his sister Catherine, his nephew Peter Allen, his nieces Ann Allen and Mary Allen, and his brother-in-law John Walker.7,8 He left his house to his wife during her widowhood. In the event, she died at about the same time as her husband. The house and household goods would then have gone to his unmarried brother Paul, who he also appointed the executor of the will. Thomas left £10 to his sister Catherine, and £5 each to the three surviving children of his deceased sister Elizabeth. From an inventory of his estate, it is apparent that Thomas was a reasonably prosperous middle-rank farmer. He also kept a shop. The value of his estate was £128, which included 16 cattle and 20 sheep. He owned a feather bed, valued at £5.
As far as is known, there were no children of Thomas's marriages. At the time of his death, however, he was maintaining a child. An unusual stipulation in his will, that his wife give the executor a bond for the large sum of £100 to "secure him from any charge which may arise by reason of a certain child which I now keep supposed to be Robert Gisby's", would suggest that he suspected a claim by the child upon his estate.
