Semantha E Sackett, daughter of Hon Jehial Sackett and Samantha Knapp, was born on 20 April 1816.1 She died aged 67 in Halls Mills, Sullivan County, New York StateG, on 5 August 1886 and was buried at St Peter's Episcopal Cemetery, Lithgow, Dutchess County, New York StateG.2,3 She married Smith P Tompkins, son of Daniel H Tompkins and Elizabeth ___.1 Smith was born in New York StateG on 22 May 1819.4,5 He died aged 66 on 23 December 1885 and was buried at St Peter's Episcopal Cemetery, LithgowG.2
Semantha was named in her mother Samantha's will made at StanfordG on 2 October 1844. She was to share the household furniture and wearing apparel with her sisters Sally and Tamena. Semantha was also to receive a loan note held against her brother Stephen for about $112.6
In 1850 Semantha was living in Stanford, Dutchess County, New York StateG, in the household of her husband Smith, 30, a paper maker, and was recorded in the census as Samantha C Tompkins, aged 33.7
In 1860 she was living in StanfordG in the household of her husband Smith P, 40, a farmer and paper maker, and was recorded as S Tompkins, aged 42.8
In 1870 she was living in StanfordG in the household of her husband Smith, 50, a paper maker, and was recorded as Semantha Tompkins, aged 53. There were also a female servant and a male laborer in the household.9
In 1880 she was living in StanfordG in the household of her husband Smith, 60, a mill owner, and was recorded as Semantha Tompkins, aged 63. Smith's father Daniel, 84, was living with them. There was also a female servant in the household. Semantha's nephew Jehial Sackett Alling, son of her sister Cornelia, was living next door with his family.10
