Gilbert Ashley, son of Noah Pease Ashley and Clarissa Bagg Sackett, was born in MassachusettsG in about 1836.1
     In 1850 Gilbert was living in SpringfieldG in the household of his parents Noah and Clarissa, and was recorded in the census as Gilbert Ashley, aged 13 and born in Massachusetts.2
     Gilbert shared, with his brothers, Justin and Joseph, in the inheritance of their father's estate. Their father Noah had died intestate. Gilbert's brother Justin was appointed, with their mother, as an administrator of the estate by the Hampden County Probate Court on 12 July 1870. With the assistance of commissioners appointed by the Court, agreement was reached for the division of the estate among Noah's three sons, allowing for their mother's right of dower in the form of a house and land at Carew Street, Springfield. The arrangement was ratified by the Court on 7 July 1874.3
