Justin Ashley, son of Noah Pease Ashley and Clarissa Bagg Sackett, was born in Springfield, Hampden County, MassachusettsG, on 8 April 1832. He married in Westfield, Hampden CountyG, on 16 May 1858, Harriet A Dewey, his second cousin once removed, daughter of Timothy Dewey Jr. and Clarissa Sacket.1
In 1850 Justin was living in SpringfieldG in the household of his parents Noah and Clarissa, and was recorded in the census as Justin Ashley, aged 18 and born in Massachusetts.2
In 1860 he was living in SpringfieldG in the household of his parents Noah and Clarissa, and was recorded as Justin Ashley, a sash and blind maker, aged 28. Living with him were his wife Harriet, 21, and their son Gilbert, aged one month.3
Justin shared, with his brothers, Gilbert and Joseph, in the inheritance of their father's estate. Their father Noah had died intestate. Justin was appointed, with his mother, as an administrator of the estate by the Hampden County Probate Court on 12 July 1870. With the assistance of commissioners appointed by the Court, agreement was reached for the division of the estate among Noah's three sons, allowing for their mother's right of dower in the form of a house and land at Carew Street, Springfield. The arrangement was ratified by the Court on 7 July 1874.4
