In 1850 Willard was living in Clarksfield, Huron County, OhioG, in the household of his parents Alexander and Louisa, and was recorded in the census as Williard Syres, aged eight and born in Pennsylvania.4
In 1860 he was living in Jamestown, Ottawa County, MichiganG, in the household of his parents Alexander and Louisa, and was recorded as Willard Sayers, a day laborer, aged 18.5
In 1870 he was living in Jamestown, Ottawa County, MichiganG, and was recorded as Willard Syers, a blacksmith, aged 27. Living with him were his wife Hannah, 22, and their children, Charles, 4, and John, aged two. They were living next door to Willard's parents.6
