George Robert Sackett, son of Robert George Sackett and Judith Fegen, was born in Thanet, KentG, in 18401 and baptized at St George's Church, Ramsgate, KentG, on 19 July 1840.2 He died of fever aged 13 in Demerara, British GuianaG, on 29 May 1853.3
In 1841 George was living at York Street, Ramsgate, KentG, in the household of his parents Robert and Judith, and was recorded in the census as George Sackett, aged one and born in Kent.4
In 1851 George was living at 12 York Street, Ramsgate, KentG, and was recorded in the census as George Sackett, a scholar, aged 10 and born in Ramsgate, son of Robert G Sackett.5
George joined the merchant navy as an apprentice on 4 December 1852, serving on the Eliza Sharp, a ship of 409 tons. He gave his age as 13 but was probably only 12. His death in Demerara, on perhaps his first voyage, suggests that the vessel was collecting a cargo of sugar for the London market.
