In the name of God Amen The year of our Lord God 1588 and in the 30th year of the reign of our Sovereign Lady Elizabeth by the grace of God Queen of England, France and Ireland Defender of the Faith I John Sackett of the parish of St Nicholas at Wade in the Isle of Thanet in the County of Kent yeoman being sick in body but of good and perfect memory thanks be to God therefore do make and ordain this my present testament and last will in manner and form following that is to say:
First I commit and commend my soul in the merciful hands of God my heavenly [father] and to his son Jesus Christ my only saviour by whom and through whom I do hope to be saved by the merits of his death and passion without any of my deserts and my body to the earth from whence it came until the day of Jesus Christ at which time it shall rise incorruptible and stand before the Son of Man. Item my mind and will is that Johane my wife shall have the lease of the farm wherein I now dwell during the term of years if she so long time do live and remain sole widow. But if it fortune that she do marry or die before the end of the said term then I will that Edward Emptage my wife’s son shall enter upon the same paying to his mother the sum of one hundred pounds within one whole year next ensuing. But if it fortune my said wife and Edward Emptage beforesaid to die before the end of the said term then I will that the remainder of those years shall fall to Martha my daughter the now wife of John Foorde. But if it fortune my said daughter to die then I will it shall fall to Alice Langley the now wife of Richard Langley my wife’s daughter. Item I give to my son-in-law John Foorde the sum of threescore pounds of lawful money of England over and above the threescore pounds I owe him to be paid to him or his assigns in manner and form following, that is to say at the Feast of All Saints next ensuing the one half and the other half on that day twelve months next ensuing. Item I give to my daughter Martha the now wife of John Foorde all my fresh and salt marsh lying at Chambers Wall within the parish of St Nicholas aforesaid and to the heirs of her body lawfully begotten. Item I give my said daughter two young heifers. Item I give to my son-in-law Richard Langley one hundred marks of good and lawful money of England to be paid to him or to his assigns at the Feast of the Purification of Our Lady next come twelve months. Item I give to my son-in-law Edward Emptage threescore pounds of good and lawful money of England to be paid to him or his assigns when he shall come to the full age of 21 years on condition that he shall hold himself full contented and not trouble my executor for any other demands or else this my said gift to be void from him and his. Item I give to the wife of William ?Harle my wife’s kinswoman one heifer. Item I give to the Master and Fellows of Corpus Christi College in Oxenford, my landlords, my young gelding. Item Give to every of my men servants 10s apiece and to every of my boys 5s apiece. Item I give to my cousin Alice ?Gussen 40s and to each of my maid servants 5s. Item I give to every poor householder within the said parish at the discretion of my wife my executrix one half bushel of wheat. Item I give towards the reparations of the parish church of St Nicholas 10s. Item I give to Mr Charles two quarters of malt. Item I give to my godchild William Charles 20s. Item I give to William Foorde one quarter of wheat. All the residue of my goods moveables cattle and leases whatsoever not bequeathed I do give to Johane my wife she paying my debts and legacies whom I do make my only executrix of this my present testament and last will.
