Mr. Nelson H. Sackett, 89, of Johnstown, passed away December 26, 2013. He was born June 29, 1924, in Amsterdam, son of the late Blair and Myrtle Kissinger Sackett. Mr. Sackett was educated in Amsterdam schools and graduated from the former Wilbur Lynch High School. He also attended Cornell University for a time. A baseball aficionado, Nelson was well known for his detail to facts and trivia. A loving and caring man, Nelson was especially proud of helping to raise his beautiful children, well respected, well educated, well centered in their lives.
He worked at Amsterdam Heating Oil. Hard working his entire life, Nelson made time to enjoy his family and friends by involving himself in their lives and community. He was a member of the Nick Stoners of Wheelerville senior citizens, and the Boy Scouts when his sons were younger. He also loved dancing and was a member of the Sacandaga Swingers square dancing and the FJ&G dancing groups. Nelson made many friends and memories throughout the years at the family camp on Caroga Lake. He will be sadly missed.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia Laird Sackett of Johnstown, whom he married February 17, 1945, at the Trinity Reformed Church in Amsterdam. Nelson is also survived by his children, Daniel Sackett (Lois) of Dover N.J., Nelson Sackett of Columbia, SC, Sharon Conroy (Stephen) of Broadalbin, Sandra Isabella (Alfred) of Amsterdam, Brian Sackett (Mary) of Longwood, FL, Jeffrey Sackett (Carl) of Seattle WA, Glenn Sackett (Karen) of N. Carolina, Terry Sackett (James) of Seattle WA, and Mark Sackett (Kortney) of Fort Plain. Additional survivors include twenty-three grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins. Mr. Sackett was pre-deceased by a daughter, Gail Sackett; and three sisters, Elizabeth Mulligan, Dorothy Blair and Marion Hutton.
A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Sunday, December 29, 2013, at Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, 51 Fremont St., Gloversville, with the Reverend Laurie Garramone, rector of St. John's Episcopal Church, Johnstown, officiating. The family will receive friends on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. prior to the service. Burial will be Evergreen Cemetery, Fonda.
