William Smith Sackett, son of Jabez Sackett and Sarah Anne "Annie" Young, was born in Walkington, Beverley, YorkshireG, on 3 January 18801,2 and died aged 85 at the Town Hospital, St Peter Port, GuernseyG, on 28 September 1965.3 He married first on 22 November 1904, Laura Catherine McKenna, daughter of Alfred McKenna and Elizabeth Ann Shaw. Laura was born in St Peter Port, GuernseyG, in about 1883.4,5 She is presumed to have died before 1928. He married second at the Registrar's Office, St Peter PortG, on 10 October 1928, Gladys Jane De La Mothe, daughter of Joseph John De La Mothe and Elizabeth Jane Rice.6 Gladys had a stillborn female child born at the Oberlands, St Peter PortG, on 12 October 1928.7 Gladys was born in St Helier, JerseyG, on 23 May 1892 and died aged 78 at the Town Hospital, St Peter Port, GuernseyG, on 10 December 1970.8
In 1881 William was living at North Gate, Walkington, YorkshireG, and was recorded in the census as William S Sackett, aged one and born in Walkington, son of Jabez Sackett.9
In 1891 he was living at 43 Paisley Street, Newington, Sculcoates, West Hull, YorkshireG, in the household of his mother Sarah, and was recorded as William J Sackett, a scholar, aged 11, and born in Walkington, Yorkshire.10
In 1901 he was living at Duveaux Lodge, St Sampson's, GuernseyG, in the household of his parents Jabez and Sarah, and was recorded as William Sackett, an agricultural labourer, single, aged 21 and born in England.11
In 1911 he was living at Les Osmonds, St Sampson'sG, and was recorded as William Smith Sackett, a gardener, head of household, aged 31 and born in Walkington. Living with him were his wife Laura, 26, and their children, Doris, 5, Catherine, 4, and Arthur, aged one.12
William served in the British Army during the First World War as a Corporal in the Royal Guernsey Light Infantry and as a Company Quarter Master Sergeant in the Royal Irish Regiment. He was awarded the Victory Medal and British Medal in recognition of active service overseas. He served in France from 17 December 1915 and was awarded the 1915 Star. He was mentioned in dispatches in March 1919.13,14,15

Living with him were his children, Doris, 15, and Catharine, 14. They were boarding in the household of his sister Laura and brother-in-law Thomas Keyho.16
In 1921 Laura was living at Iran, 20 Acacia Road, Ham, SurreyG, in the household of Nowrojee Dadabhog Allbless, 60, a barrister-at-law. She was listed in the census as Laura Catherine Sackett, a general domestic servant, aged 36. Apparently separated from her husband William, she described herself as a widow.17
