William Henry Sackett, farmer, later a rate collector, son of Henry Sackett and Susannah Rea, was born in Orsett, EssexG, in 18401 and baptized at St Giles & All Saints, OrsettG, on 18 April 1840.2 He died aged 82 at home at 21 Camden Square, St Pancras, LondonG, on 26 April 19223,4 and was buried at St Giles and All Saints, OrsettG.5,6,7 He married at OrsettG on 28 November 1867, Martha Randall, daughter of William Mills Randall and Martha Jackson.8,9,10 Martha was born in OrsettG in 184211 and baptized at St Giles and All Saints, OrsettG, on 12 February 1843.12 She died aged 77 at home at 37 White Hill Road, Gravesend, KentG, on 19 February 19194,6,13 and was buried at St Giles and All SaintsG.14
     In 1841 William was living at Lodysons, Orsett, EssexG, in the household of his parents Henry and Susannah, and was recorded in the census as William Sackett, aged one and born in Essex.15
     In 1851 he was living at Long Orsett Farm, OrsettG, in the household of his parents Henry and Susannah, and was recorded as William H Sackett, a scholar, aged 11 and born in Orsett, Essex.16
     In 1861 he was living at OrsettG and was recorded as William Sackett, aged 21 and born in Orsett, son of Susannah Sackett.17
     In 1871 he was living at Heath Place, OrsettG, and was recorded as William Henry Sackett, head of household, a farmer with 166 acres and employing six men. He was aged 31 and born in Orsett. Other family members were his wife Martha, aged 28 and born in Orsett, his daughter Ada, aged 2, his son Walter, aged one, and his mother-in-law, Martha Randall. Also in the household were two female servants.18
     In 1881 he was living at Heath Place, OrsettG, and was recorded as William H Sackett, head of household, a rate collector, aged 41 and born in Orsett. The other members of his household were his wife Martha, aged 37 and also born in Orsett, his children, Ada, 12, Walter, 11, Wilfred, 7, Gertrude, 6, and Edith, 4, and a domestic servant, Mary Ruff.19
     In 1891 he was living at Wingfield House, OrsettG, and was recorded as William Henry Sackett, a collector of poor rates, head of household, married, aged 51 and born in Orsett. Living with him were his wife Martha, 48, and children, Ada, 22, Walter, 21, Wilfrid, 17, Gertrude, Edith, 14, and Sidney, aged eight. Also in the household was a 16-year-old female domestic servant.20
     In 1895 William was the collector of poor rates in Orsett. In 1895 and 1899 he was listed as an insurance agent for Phoenix Fire, operating from his home, Wingfield Villa, Orsett.21
     William was named as executor of his aunt Martha Ann Sackett's will, proved on 28 November 1898. The estate was valued at £224.22
     In 1901 he was living at Wingfield House, St Giles & All Saints, OrsettG, and was recorded as William Henry Sackett, head of household, a collector of poor rates, aged 61 and born in Orsett. The other members of his household were his daughters Ada, 32, and Edith, 24, his sons Wilfred, 27, and Sidney, 18, and a 15-year-old female domestic servant.23 At the date of the census William's wife Martha was at 31 Chester Terrace, St Pancras, LondonG, visiting Robert and Eliza Perkins and their son Herbert Mottram Perkins who was soon to marry William and Martha's daughter Ada.24
     In 1911 he was living at 38 Whitehill Road, Gravesend, KentG, and was recorded as William Henry Sackett, a retired poor rate collector for the Orsett Union, head of household, aged 71 and born in Orsett. Living with him were his wife Martha, 68, and their unmarried daughter Edith, 34. There was also a female domestic servant in the household.25

     William's wife Martha left a will which was proved on 16 May 1919 by their daughter Edith. Her estate was valued at £798.26
     In 1921 he was living at 21 Camden Square, St Pancras, LondonG, in the household of his daughter Ada and son-in-law Herbert Perkins, and was recorded as William Henry Sackett, a retired rate collector, a widower, aged 81.27
     William left a will which was proved on 10 June 1922 by his daughter Edith. His estate was valued at £1,573.28
