Rev Benjamin Sackett, Independent Congregational minister, son of Benjamin Sackett Cox and Mary Ann Cooper, was born in Hythe, KentG, on 3 June 18341,2 and baptized at St Leonard's Wesleyan Church, HydeG, on 6 July 1834.1 He died in Shadwell, Stepney, LondonG, on 10 May 1900.3 He married in Elham, KentG, on 22 October 1857, Elizabeth Lee, daughter of Richard Lee and Sarah Sherwood.4,5 Elizabeth was born in HytheG in 18356 and died aged 85 in West Ham, EssexG, in 1920.7
     The Revd Benjamin served in a number of parishes during his ministry—Feltham, Middlesex, 1868–71; Langford, Oxfordshire, 1871–77; Witney, Oxfordshire, 1877–80; and Ebenezer, Watney Street, Shadwell (St George's-in-the-East), London, 1880–1900.2
     In 1841 Benjamin was living at Slade Street, St Leonard, Hythe, KentG, in the household of his parents Benjamin and Mary, and was recorded in the census as Benjamin Sackett, aged seven and born in Kent.8
     In 1851 he was living at 30 Slade Street, HytheG, and was recorded as Benjamin Sackett, a gardener's boy, aged 16 and born in Hythe, son of Benjamin Sackett.9
     In 1861 he was living at High Street, Hythe, KentG, and was recorded as Benjamin Sackett, head of household, a local preacher, a gardener, grocer & fruiterer employing two men and a boy. Benjamin was aged 26 and born in Hythe. The other members of his family were his wife Elizabeth, aged 25, also born in Hythe, and their two-week-old daughter Sarah. Also in the household were a 57-year-old shoemaker's wife, Jane Bourne, and an 18-year-old unmarried servant, Julia Earle. Benjamin and Elizabeth's son Benjamin, now one, was staying with his grandparents Richard and Sarah Lee at the date of the census (7 April 1861.)10
     In 1871 he was living at Fern Lane, Heston, MiddlesexG, and was recorded as Benjamin Sackett, head of household, an Independent minister, aged 36 and born in Hythe, Kent. The other members of his household were his wife Elizabeth, aged 35 and also born in Hythe, and his children, Benjamin Richard, 11, Elizabeth Sarah, 10, Emily Lucy, 8, Harry Lee, 5, and Annie Catherine Dorothy, aged two.11
     In 1881 he was living at 7 Trinity Terrace, Stepney, MiddlesexG, and was recorded as Benjamin Sackett, head of household, Independent Minister at Ebenezer Chapel, Watney Street, aged 46 and born in Hythe, Kent. The other members of his household were his wife Elizabeth, aged 45 and also born at Hythe, and his children, Elizabeth, 20, Emily, 17, Annie, 12, Blanche, 9, George, 8, John, 6, Martin, 4, and Robert, aged 11 months.12
     In 1891 he was living at 14 Albert Square, StepneyG, and was recorded as Benjamin Sackett, head of household, a Congregational minister, aged 56 and born in Hythe, Kent. The other members of his household were his wife Elizabeth, aged 55 and also born in Hythe, and his children, Annie, 22, Blanche, 19, George, 18, John, 16, Martin, 14, and Robert, aged ten.13
     In 1901 Benjamin's widow Elizabeth was living at 2 Chaucer Street, Wanstead, EssexG, and was recorded in the census as Elizabeth Sackett, a widow, head of household, aged 65 and born in Hythe, Kent. Living with her were her widowed daughter Emily Spice, 37, unmarried sons, George, 28, Martin, 24, and Robert, 20, and Emily's three-year-old daughter Dorothy W Spice.14
