Florence Russell, daughter of Isaac Newton Russell and Flora Susannah Sackett, was born in Waterbury, New Haven County, ConnecticutG, on 9 August 1882.1 She died aged 66 in Greencastle, IndianaG, on 24 June 1949.1 She married on 26 June 1907, Edwin Bryant Nichols, son of James Nichols and Elizabeth Toulmin.1 Edwin was born in Hartford, ConnecticutG, on 26 February 18691 and died aged 77 in Greencastle, IndianaG, on 26 June 1946.1
In 1900 Florence was living at 43 Hillside Avenue, WaterburyG, in the household of her parents Isaac and Flora, and was recorded in the census as Florence H Russell, at college, aged 17 and born in Connecticut.2
Florence Russell was graduated from Wellesley College in 1903 after which she taught high school mathematics in Massachusetts and then at Harcourt Place Seminary in Gambier, Ohio. In Ohio she met her husband, Edwin Nichols, who later took a teaching position at DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana. When it became clear that Florence would settle in the Midwest, her mother "required" her to return home to Connecticut once a year. She did.
Florence loved Shakespeare. She collected individual leather-bound volumes of his works, was a member of the Shakespeare Society and acted in plays in college. A woman of intellectual energy she was active in two women's organizations comprised mainly of wives of DePauw faculty members. She enjoyed playing bridge and reading aloud with her husband. She is beloved for passing on a tradition of unique Chocolate Peppermint candies.
Florence had frequent strokes over a 15-year period eventually causing her death in 1949. Her wonderful Victorian style home at 707 E. Seminary in Greencastle remained in the family for 55 years. Her daughter Anne lived in the home and maintained a medical practice there until 1973. Several lovely items from the home remain in the family.
