[Chauncey Sackett] learned the trade of carpenter and joiner, which he followed for a number of years with success, when he purchased a farm to the cultivation of which he turned his attention, living first in a log house, and later building for his family a commodious frame dwelling. He was for many years an active abolitionist, and his house was known as one of the stations on the so-called "underground railroad," by means of which runaway slaves were conveyed in safety from their southern plantation homes to Canada.
