Hon Martin Russell Sackett, newspaper editor and US Consul to Prescott, Canada, son of Russell R Sackett and Deborah Brown, was born in New York StateG in April 1854.1,2 He died aged about 88 in Miami, FloridaG, in 1942.3 He married on 27 June 1882, Marion J Cowles, daughter of Rev Aaron J Cowles and Marion Josephine Titus.1 Marion was born in New York StateG in August 1863.4
     In 1860 Martin was living in Plymouth, Chenango County, New York StateG, in the household of his parents Russell and Deborah, and was recorded in the census as Martin R Sackett, aged seven and born in New York.5
     In 1870 he was living in PlymouthG in the household of his parents Russell and Deborah, and was recorded as Martin R Sackett, farm laborer, aged 17.6
     In 1880 he was living in Syracuse, Onondaga County, New York StateG, in the household of Ansel Kinne, school principal, and was recorded as Martin Sackett, a student, single, aged 27.7
     In 1900 he was living at South Main Street, Gouverneur, St Lawrence County, New York StateG, and was recorded as Martin R Sackett, an editor, head of household, aged 46. He owned his home on a mortgage. Living with him were his wife Marion, 36, their children, Irma, 17, Marion, 11, Julia, 3, and Russell, aged one, and his widowed mother-in-law Marion Cowles, 71. There was also a female servant in the household.8
     In 1910 he was living at Ford Street, Ogdensburg, St Lawrence County, New York StateG, and was recorded as Martin R Sackett, newspaper editor and US Consul, head of household, aged 55. Living with him were his wife Marion, 45, and their children, Irma, 27, Marion, 21, Julia, 13, and Russell, aged twelve.9
     In 1911 he was living at James Street, Prescott, Grenville County, Ontario, CanadaG, and was recorded as Martin R Sackett, head of household, married, aged 56 and born in the USA. His occupation was given as "USC", presumably US Consul. Living with him were his wife Marion, 47, and their children, Irma, 28, Julia, 14, and Russell, aged 12. The family had immigrated to Canada in 1906.10
     Martin was listed in the 1916 and 1917 Albany, New York, City Directory as a financial clerk.11
     In 1920 he was living at Jay Street, Albany, New York StateG, and was recorded as Martin Sackett, newspaper editor, aged 64. His wife Marion, 53, was living with him. They were lodging in the household of Nora Champion, 71, a widow, and her two daughters.12
     In 1930 he was living at Stone Street, Watertown, Jefferson County, New York StateG, and was recorded as Martin Sackett, head of household, aged 76. He rented his home. His wife Marion, 66, was living with him.13
     Martin and Marion were listed in the Miami Directory in 1942, living at 1535 SW 2nd Street, Miami, FloridaG. Their son Russell was living with them.14
Martin Russell Sackett ... graduated from Syracuse University, class of 1880, and a short time thereafter was chosen principal of Gouverneur Wesleyan Seminary, of Jamestown, N. Y., and taught for seven years; after which he organized the Gouverneur Publishing Co., for the purpose of publishing the Northern Tribune, which paper he in 1907 still controlled. In 1892 he was elected treasurer of St. Lawrence County, and held that office for two terms. In May, 1903, President Roosevelt named him Consul to Prescott Canada, which post he was filling in 1907. He is an active member of the Masonic fraternity, the Odd Fellows, and other social and fraternal bodies. He is an able editorial writer, and is particularly effective as a speaker upon patriotic and anniversary occasions in the discussion of political, economic and historical subjects. For a number of years his services have been in demand in state and national campaigns.
