Alfred James Sackett, son of Jabez Sackett and Sarah Anne "Annie" Young, was born in Rye, SussexG, on 16 October 18651,2 and baptized at Wesleyan Methodist Chapel, RyeG, on 21 November 1865.2 He died aged 76 of a heart attack not far from his house in Grange Road, St Peter Port, GuernseyG, on 15 January 1942 while walking to work as a nurse at the Town Hospital. It is said that the attack was brought on by a combination of the bitter cold and the shock of his being challenged by a German sentry.3,4 He was buried at the Foulon Cemetery, St Peter PortG, on 17 January 1942.5 He married first at Prestwich, LancashireG, in 1891, Millian "Millie" Davies, daughter of Horatio Davies and Mary A Robinson.6,7,8 She was born in Salford, Manchester, LancashireG, in 1872.9,10 He married second in about 1894, Lydia Hatfield, daughter of John Hatfield and Sarah Jane Shaw.11 Lydia was born at 4 Providence Terrace, Gibson Street, Hull, YorkshireG, on 9 September 186812 and died aged 86 in GuernseyG on 10 October 1954.13
     In 1871 Alfred was living at High Street, Hythe, KentG, in the household of his parents Jabez and Sarah, and was recorded in the census as Alfred J Sackett, aged five and born in Rye, Sussex.14
     In 1881 he was living at High Street, St Leonard, Hythe, KentG, in the household of his uncle George Young, a grocer, and was recorded as Alfred Sackett, a grocer's assistant, aged 15, and born in Rye, Sussex.15
     In 1891 he was living at 2 Anne Street, Cheetham, Manchester, LancashireG, and was recorded as Alf J Sackett, a commercial clerk, head of household, married, aged 25 and born in Rye. Living with him was his wife Millian, aged 19.16
     In 1901 he was living at 5 Francis Terrace, Islington, LondonG, and was recorded as Alfred J Sackett, a selling agent, head of household, married, aged 35, and born in Rye, Sussex. Living with him were his wife Lydia, aged 32 and born in Hull, and their two-year-old daughter Alma.17
     Alfred and Lydia Sackett moved sometime between 1901 and 1905 from London to Guernsey where Alfred's parents and siblings were already established.
     In 1911 he was living at Ollivier Street, St Anne's, AlderneyG, and was recorded as Alfred James Sackett, a clerk, head of household, married, aged 45 and born in Rye, Sussex. Living with him were his wife Lydia, 41, and their children, Alma, 12, Leslie, 5, and Douglas, aged three.18
     In 1921 he was living at 3 New Paris Street, St Peter Port, GuernseyG, and was recorded as Alfred James Sackett, aged 55. He was out of work at the date of the census, his last employment having been with Rowe & Mitchell, granite merchants, in Alderney. He was a visitor in the household of his sister Laura and brother-in-law Thomas Keyho.19
     In 1921 Lydia, 52, married, was living at 2 Choisi Terrace, St Peter PortG, as a cook in the household of Henry Wild, medical practitioner.20
