Jesse Guy Parmenter (1882-1966)

Note that in the second 1900 census listing (where the children are listed with their father in Wyoming) that "Jessie", b. Sep 1882 (rather than 1881 in the other 1900 listing) is listed as a girl. My theory is that Jesse (a boy) may not have been present, so the enumerator assumed that they were referring to a girl. Also, there are other discrepancies in the birthdates of almost all the children. I'm not sure why the children are listed in both households--perhaps they were visiting their father--but their mother probably had the more accurate information on their birthdates. Sumner and Molly separated between 1885 and 1900 (our family legend says he left her), but they both subsequently listed themselves as widowed.

George, Jesse, and Clara are listed in the 1885 census of Nebraska, so Clara couldn't have been born in 1886: 1885 Nebraska state census, Pawnee Co., Plum Creek Precinct, shows Sumner Parmenter, 35, farmer, b. Illinois, mother b. N.Y., father b. [illegible], with wife Mary E., 31, b. Iowa, mother b. Indiana, father b. Ohio; son George, 5, b. Nebraska, mother b. Illinois, father b. Iowa; son Jessee G., 2, b. Kansas, mother b. Illinois, father b. Iowa; daughter Clara, 8 mos., b. Nebraska, mother b. Illinois, father b. Iowa (another case of the transcriber reversing the parents’ birth places). [It appears that they moved from Nebraska to Kansas and back again, from the birth states of the three children.]
